Moving Short Kitchen Cabinets Up To Meet 8 Foot Ceiling

Extending kitchen cabinets to the ceiling is a great way to increase cabinet storage space and make your kitchen appear larger.
Here is a working drawing of a kitchen with an 8 ft ceiling. You might remember awhile back i scribbled out a little sketch of what i wanted my someday kitchen to look like. If you don t like the look of 42 then i would advise going with 39. There are a few different factors to consider before deciding whether or not to extend your cabinets.
If you take only one thing away from the entirety of my story blog let it be that someday isn t ev ver going to happen unless you make someday today. This design shows crown molding on top of 36 tall uppers and a small space between the crown and ceiling. We are really into extending things and making them look bigger. We have 8 foot ceilings and put up 42 inch cabinets.
This also allows you to hide the stained plastic ware and tall tumblers in the space above and still show off the best dishes that you own. Here is the same kitchen with a riser molding added below the crown molding which takes the cabinets all the way to the ceiling. The riser molding is outlined in red. We did choose to have glass doors on 4 of the upper cabinets which does lighten up the look.

Move the current cabinets up to the ceiling and add open shelving to the space below to create modern look. We also just extended our lower kitchen cabinets by adding open shelving and a tilt out trash can but the newest thing we did was extend our upper kitchen cabinets to the ceiling using one piece of wood.
