Take off handles pull knobs hinges and any other hardware.
Do not sand unsealed cabinets. But how do you feel about pairing white or off white upper kitchen cabinets with dark or colorful lower kitchen cabinets. Remove doors and drawers from the cabinet. Once you are happy with the color make sure you finish by applying a layer of a polyurethane finish.
First remove the drawer faces and cabinet doors. I have seen people stain them in place but don t do it. Allow your stain to dry and check it s as dark as you d like. If you ve decided to darken your cabinets lets go over the steps i suggest you follow.
This will seal in the color protect your cabinets and add a shiny varnished look. While going for dark colors may seem to go against the accepted perception that a kitchen should have bright and warm colors you might be surprised at how well it works for most kitchens. Clean the cabinets with a strong degreasing cleaner and rinse off the residue with a damp sponge. First remove the cabinet doors shelves drawers and all of the hardware.
