In my opinion chalk paint is for those people who are looking to get a more rustic imperfect old used and abused finish on their project i e furniture.
However the finish coat is what protects your furniture. But that s because they re usually thin. Chalk paint is intended to change the color of the item you are painting much like latex oil or craft paint would. Chalk paint is about as durable as latex paint.
After you apply chalk paint you will need to seal the finish with wax. Often the pigments arent as saturated and concentrated in latex acrylic paint. Additionally chalk paints grab to each other. Is it really that good.
Chalk paint and chalkboard paint are different. Chalk paint is a fantastic option for painting cabinets since there is barely any prep work involved that s right no sanding and sanding and sanding it goes on easily you only need a couple coats and it has a beautiful finish. Chalk paint adheres well to surfaces if there is no possibility of a stain bleeding through if the surface does not have a sheen and if you plan on using a protectant coat on top of the chalk paint. Latex style paints slide across one another.

However because chalk paints are usually thick and saturated they don t cover much. They are both water based so they will both react roughly the same to water stains spills nicks etc. In contrast regular paints can cover tons of space with a single coat. Link at end of this video.
